Ustad Allaudin Khan: A legendary melodic narrator of classical music

Musicians are always bound to express the resemblance of their cogitation through melody. Eminent personalities have enriched the debonair of music and Ustad Allauddin Khan is one of them. This legendary personality had left the mark of excellence both in vocal and instrumental music. He was born in a music admirer family in 1862 at Brahombariya.

Allauddin Khan’s inclination for music has infused him to overcome all the barriers. He always searched for spirituality in music and this inquisitive attribute led him to be in touch with many renowned personalities to pursue musical erudition from them. Being an expert of different instruments like Flute, Setar, Banjo, Mandolin, Mridongo, Tobla, Shanai, and many more, he even got laudation from the people of royal status. He got the lesson of playing Sarod from two eminent Sharod musicians called Ahmed Ali khan and Wazir Khan. The scriptural music of the subcontinent was introduced worldwide by him. Moreover, our regional music got immense recognition for him.

In the year 1935, Allauddin Khan traveled to many countries with renowned dancer Uday Sankar. For his contribution, Indian classical music “Raag Sangeet” is acknowledged by foreign music praisers. His band’s name was “Rampur String Band” which used to follow Arcester's music style consisting of local instruments. He is also the pioneer of a new community of performers who share a distinctive musical style that traces to a particular instructor or region, which is known as “Maihar Gharana”. Still, people remember him as one of the best instrumental musicians across the subcontinent.

He achieved several awards both from the Pakistani and Bangladeshi governments including “Padmabhushan” and “Ekushey Padak”. The University of Delhi entitled him as “Dr of Law” and he also got the state award called “Pride of Performance”. Ustad Allauddin Khan was also a social worker. He had made a mosque and pond in his village. He also contributed to “Maihar College of Music” and made a music hermitage which is known as “Allauddin Khan Music College”. His wife’s name is Modina Bibi and among his children, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Rowshon Ara gained popularity as a musician. He breathed his last in 1972 In India.

The endowment of Ustad Allauddin Khan in music gives the classical melody a different height. He will always be remembered with great respect and veneration.
