The rivers of Bangladesh will inevitably be one of the prime topics if we measure the blissfulness of Mother Nature upon this country. The existence of around 700 rivers plays a noteworthy role in terms of stimulating the country's economy and communication system. Dhaleshwari River is one of these remarkable rivers.
The name Dhaleshwari comes from Bangla literature where the verbal meaning stands for “Goddess with white complexion”. Despite being one of the oldest rivers, it is a distributary that flows from the mainstream channel with a length of 160 kilometers.
River Jamuna is the origin place of Dhaleshwari. The initiated spot of this river is at Tangail district and it flows as the northern branch of Jamuna from Jamuna’s splitting point. Dhaleshwari streams through Manikganj, Dhaka, and Munshiganj. River Buriganga is a branch of Dhaleshwari. A small island named “Kutiyamora Shonakanda” has risen in Munshiganj by the silt that it carried. Later, it merges with the Shitlakya River near Narayanganjdistrict. And the other part of it ends at the Meghna River. Dhaleshwari Bridge is a major infrastructure that can be seen while visiting it. According to the research, the depth measurement of this river is a maximum of 265 feet and 122 feet on average.
Poets and literature admirers are fond of the effervescent beauty of Dhaleshwari. One will observe the vibrant presence of the Kingfisher bird and fishermen are also seen catching fish simultaneously. Plenty of fishes like Boyal, Pangash, Chital, Pabda, koi, and many more are also available. People are also seen to work in Brick Kiln at the shore of it. In the rainy season, the river gets its billowy form. It has immense significance in terms of nautical trade affairs. Farmers cultivate different types of vegetables like Tomato, Chili, and beans on the fertile riverside. People who are associated with this cultivation manifest their gratitude towards Dhaleshwari.
As time passed, the river has also gone through numerous changes. Still, the diversity and amplitude are enough to blow a visitor's mind. Hope the symphonic melody of Dhaleshwari will always resonate in our minds.
